Born on February 28, 1930, in Mexia to Tom and Clara Belle (Bybee) Buckingham, Tom spent his formative years in Jacksonville, Texas. Tom later graduated from Lon Morris Junior College in Jacksonville, Texas, and the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor's degree in Business. Following graduation, he proudly answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army. After his military service, Tom dedicated many years of his professional life as a Statistician to the State of Texas.
On September 20, 1952, Tom married the love of his life, Virginia Charles, in the chapel of University United Methodist Church in Austin. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to devotion, partnership, and enduring love, spanning 67 cherished years filled with laughter, faith, family, and unwavering support for one another.
A man of deep faith and gentle spirit, Tom was an active and devoted member of the Leander Methodist church, where he generously gave of his time and talents in service to others. He believed strongly in helping those around him and lived his faith not only through words, but through quiet acts of kindness, compassion, and generosity.
Tom found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid reader and enjoyed working on his computer and keeping up with technology well into his later years. He also had a special affection for animals, particularly his beloved cat, Coco, who brought him much comfort and companionship. Even in death, Tom’s kindness continued, as his pacemaker was donated to help a dog in need — a final reflection of his caring and giving nature.
Above all else, Tom treasured his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and delighted great-grandfather whose warmth, wisdom, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia, and his parents, Tom Sr. and Clara Buckingham.
He leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory: his children, Sandy (Jeff) of Teague, Greg of North Richland Hills, and Nancy (Robert) of Cedar Park; his five grandchildren, Danielle, Victoria, Sara, Robbie (Jamila), and Kerri; and four great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Noah, Percy, and Jasper. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Buckingham, and wife Maxine, along with many treasured relatives, dear friends, and all whose lives were touched by his kindness and grace.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Visting Angels for the compassionate care, comfort, and support they provided during Tom’s final days.
Though he will be greatly missed, Tom’s legacy of faith, love, service, and quiet generosity will live on in the countless lives he touched.
