Maria Hoang Thi Tram was born on October 27, 1932, in Son La, Do Luong, Vietnam. She was the eldest of four daughters born to Mr. Hoang Van Canh and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Sen, and was raised in a traditional Catholic family.
In 1952, she married Mr. Nguyen Van Khiem. Three years later, in 1955, she and her husband relocated to Saigon to begin a new life in the South. Despite the many challenges of settling in a new place, Maria gave birth to and raised six children: three sons and three daughters. Her husband, a police officer, was often away for work, but she bore the weight of raising the family with quiet strength and unwavering resilience.
During the Vietnam War, she worked at the Long Binh base in Bien Hoa, supporting the U.S. military effort. After 1975, with the country in turmoil, life became even more difficult. She and her husband moved to the New Economic Zone in Binh Gia, Ba Ria, leaving their six children in Saigon under the care of their grandmother so the children could continue their education. Though the farming work was grueling and the conditions harsh, she never once complained. Her love and sacrifices laid the foundation for her children's brighter futures.
In October 1992, Mrs. Hoang and her husband immigrated to the United States through the family reunification program, sponsored by their two eldest sons who had earlier escaped Vietnam. The family settled in Austin, Texas, where she became an active member of the Vietnamese Martyrs Parish and the Catholic Mothers Association. Her deep faith sustained her throughout her life. She attended Mass regularly, read the Bible daily, and prayed the rosary faithfully until her final days.
Mrs. Hoang found joy in gardening, especially growing flowers and ornamental plants. She loved to travel and treasured every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. She lived a full and meaningful life, surrounded by family and friends who loved her dearly.
On the afternoon of September 2, 2025, Maria Hoang Thi Tram peacefully returned to God’s embrace in Austin, Texas. She was 92 years old.
