Velma Weathers of Pflugerville, Texas passed away on Sunday May 10, 2026, at the age of 94. She was born to Walter and Otelia Weathers on August 18, 1931, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Her Family moved to Houston, Texas when she was eleven years old. She was baptized by her Father (Minister) at a young age at Third Ward Church of Christ (Houston).
Velma graduated from Jack Yates H.S. in 1948. Years later, she furthered her education, through Houston's Federally Funded Mental Health Certification Program, established in 1969. After achieving Certification, she continued working in the field of Mental Health for 8 years. She documented the first guidelines on how to instruct and assist Mental Health patients as they transitioned to an independent lifestyle, after they had lived in Mental Health institutions for years. Velma then became an entrepreneur and opened a business in 1977 named The Excellence. Her business focused on independent living.
The city of Houston recognized Velma Weathers' business, The Excellence, in 1978. This recognition reflected the city's support for local entrepreneurs and their contributions to the community. Velma Weathers was noted for her efforts in promoting business and community engagement during that time.
Velma was actively involved in the Church of Christ from her youth. She attended Third Ward Church of Christ for 15 years. She later worshiped at Clover Land Church of Christ for 11 years before moving back to Oklahoma to assist an ailing aunt. Velma later moved to Pflugerville, TX in 2001 where she worshipped first at Westside Church of Christ and later at the Schultz Lane congregation. She was an avid supporter and Instructor for World Bible School Postal Program, sponsored by the Westside congregation.
In the mid 70’s she spear-headed the effort to keep-the-doors open at a relatively new/ growing congregation, Southside Church of Christ. It was located in a South Houston community miles away from other congregations. She dedicated personal time and attention to contact every Minority Church of Christ Congregation in and around Houston for assistance. Armed with her tenacious spirit and prayer, she asked and received support from every congregation contacted in the Houston/ Metroplex area. Through her efforts (over 50 years ago) the doors continued to remain open. To this day, many wonderful souls have come to know the Lord through the Southside Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings Vernon, Bertha Mae, Alberta and Wilbert. She leaves a Legacy of Love for God and Love for Others.
The family would like to thank Sage Valley Senior Living in Pflugerville, TX for the care and compassion they showed our Mother in her final days. Our special thanks to Amber, Shamyra, Quinton, Nikki and the entire Memory Care Team. The Family also wishes to thank Kindful Health Hospice in Austin, Tx, with special appreciation for nurses Marcy Evans, Donna Mabry and Lillian Romani.
Heartfelt thanks to Mom’s friend, Ms Edith Williams, who was by her side faithfully through both good times and storms. We love you and may God continue to bless you (and your daughter Shawn).
