Chesley Stewart Pottle, born November 12, 1945 to Matilda Beatrice Pottle (“Grandma Tilly”) and Cluny Joseph Pottle, returned to his heavenly home August 2, 2022. Ches, one of seven children, came from humble means. He was born and raised in the small fishing village of St. John’s off the coast of Newfoundland. He valued resourcefulness, a hard work ethic, and the reward of self reliance from a very young age. These attributes, established as a small child, would later be recognized by others as great strengths in blessing the lives of those around him.
Ches moved to the United States, and it was here that he chose to be baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shortly after, he met Irene... the love of his life, and they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Many of his fondest memories centered around his courtship with Irene. They worked together during those early years, and he often reminisced about how much he admired her ability to equally match his own work standards (the utmost compliment) from the very beginning. It quickly became evident that this would ring true in all aspects of their lives as they served in callings together, raised a family, and ministered to others. She was his perfect counterpart. During his time as a young father he served as a beloved bishop, youth leader, scout master, bishop’s counselor, high councilman and was later called to be a stake president. In recent years he served as a temple worker while also fulfilling a service mission with his sweetheart Irene. Even as great- grandparents, they continued to be devoted to the things that brought them the greatest happiness, serving the Lord and showing their love for Him by serving others.
Ches was a man of faith, and he took every opportunity to share that faith. While we treasure these memories and hold them close to our hearts, we also feel immensely blessed to be his posterity, endowed with the privilege to carry on as he did...striving to live as the Savior lived. With reverent reflection on Chesley’s life of service, our hearts are also full of love and gratitude for our mother. As sons and daughters, grandchildren and great- grandchildren we look forward, with joy, to that day when we see him again. Until then, we find peace in the words of our Redeemer,
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
