Dorothy was born in Tipton, Iowa in 1922, where she spent her early years. In 1944, she moved to San Francisco, California, where she met the love of her life, Andrew Amate. They were married in May 1946 and built a beautiful life together, raising their family. In 1967, they relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where they co-owned and operated a successful pest control business. After Andrew’s passing, Dorothy later moved to Surprise, Arizona.
Dorothy cherished her retirement years, often traveling between Surprise and Grants Pass, Oregon, making frequent stops to visit family along the way. A devoted fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks, she was thrilled to attend Game 5 of the World Series and continued to enjoy watching their games on television.
She is survived by her daughters, Gerry Arevalo and Denise Hughes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Amate; daughter, Dorothy Jensen; son, Robert Amate; sister, Geraldine Garlick; and mother, Clara Smith. Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of love through her 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on June 27th at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 N. 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009. A viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a clergy-led service at 11:00 a.m., and burial at 12:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause close to her heart.
