Fred was born in Elma, Iowa to Alice (Groth) and Harold Henry Hartwig, the baby of 3 siblings. When Fred was young his family relocated to Arizona. This is where he attended school and graduated from Mesa High School, during this time he was on the Mesa High Football Team. After High School Fred served his Country in the Army from June 1965 to July 1969 where he learned his mechanic trade.
Fred retired from Cummins Diesel after a long career and shortly after returned to work at Auto Safety House for a brief time.
He raised two sons Todd and Kyle before marrying the love of his life Sherry (Goodrich) in Carson City, Nevada and three additional children were added to his family; Kim, Kathy and Brent.
Fred loved to hunt, spend time in his yard tending to many flowers and taking care of his pool always while listening to his favorite oldies radio station or visiting with a neighbor. If you stopped by and he wasn’t home, you could bet he was at one of his favorite casinos passing time and winning some cash. He also was an avid sports fan who would give you his take on any given team or player of the sport he was watching at the time. The last thing he watched was the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies and when asked if he liked the new uniforms, he was not a fan.
He leaves behind his children; Kyle, Kim Belcher, Kathy Gardner (Justin) and Brent. 7 loving Grandchildren, Terry (Heather) Belcher, Tisha(Chris) Griffith, Tara (Robert) King, Tiffanie Welsh, Tanisha Hartwig, Chelsea (Johnny) Peters and Sabrina Hartwig and 16 Greatgrandchildren. He also leaves behind a loyal Postman, Raul and a group of dedicated and loving friends and neighbors.
He was greeted in Heaven by his parents Alice and Harold Hartwig, his loving wife Sherry, sister Dorreen, brother Roger, and his son Todd.
Fred L. Hartwig will be laid to rest with his wife Sharon Lee Hartwig at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona located at 2929 E. Pinnacle Peak Road in Phoenix, Arizona 85024 on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 10am. Please join the family to celebrate. Please be early as the Honors will be prompt.
