He attended Plainwell High School and joined the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1964.
He worked for the Plainwell Police Department from 1968 until 1974 and went on to the Sheriff’s Department in 1974. Fred retired from the Sheriff’s Department after 27 years of service.
Fred was one of the founding members of the Allegan County Sheriff Department Honor Guard. He also worked for the Plainwell ambulance service.
Fred was a very caring man and loved by everyone.
Fred is survived by his children Fred Jr., Heath and Alexandria (Scott) Selent and many grandchildren.
Fred is survived by two brothers, Francis (Nancy) Platteborze, Butch Lanphear (Jackie) and one sister, Catherine Manigold.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Platteborze and Mary Lanphear, stepfather Vernon Lanphear, one grandson and many aunts and uncles and his soulmate for many years Connie Woolner.
According to Fred’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A small memorial will be held in El Mirage Arizona where Fred lived for 20 years. There will be a memorial service in Michigan at a later date.
