Howard Halsne, 82, a long-time resident of Palatine, Illinois passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on November 14, 2023, in Phoenix, AZ. He was born January 28, 1941, to Osmund and Hanna (Clausen) Halsne and was raised with his two older sisters in northwest Chicago. Howard attended Kelvyn Park High School where he was captain of the football team and later attended Wilbur Wright College. He served with pride in the United States Army from 1958 to 1962, being stationed in Germany during much of that time. Howard was united in marriage to Karen Lostumo on September 10, 1966. Howard and Karen had two daughters, Alana and Marla and raised their family in Palatine.
Howard spent his career as an engineer, earning several patents for his innovative work in heating and cooling technologies. Additionally, Howard owned and operated a successful charter fishing venture on Lake Michigan. It was from his passion for sport fishing and his entrepreneurial spirit that Howard developed the commercially successful line of “Howie Fly” fishing lures during the 1980s. Today, these lures are still helping anglers catch salmon and trout in the Great Lakes, Canada, and around the world. Howard spent many wonderful times on Lake Michigan and was happy to share his love of fishing and the outdoors with others.
Those left to honor Howard's memory are his two daughters, Alana (Brent) Baarda of Libertyville and Marla Greenspan (Greg LaPointe) of Phoenix, Arizona, three grandsons, Evan, Ryan, and Brendan Greenspan, and many lifelong friends, neighbors, and extended family. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Karen, and two sisters, Dolores Capek, and Lorraine Engelen.
Howard cared deeply for the people around him. He will be remembered for his warm heart, kindness, and generosity. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
