I was number 5 in brother Jim's family, Jim was number one. I always would look up to my big brother growing up,  Jim would pick on me once in a while because I was a baby in the family, but as adults he did feel bad for doing that, We were very close in our older years, we road Motorcycles together, went on many outings together with friends and family, Jim was always very sharing with his wonderful family and himself with me and my family, I will never forget all the wonderful good times we all had together. Jim will always be a big part of me and my thoughts,  Rest in Peace Jim, Your Baby Brother Larry

I wanted to share a memory about my Uncle Jim. Although he lived in Phoenix, there was always a special place in his heart for San Diego. I remember he would come down to Grandma Doris’ house and hike Cowles Mountain at sunrise. That means he would leave Phoenix around 11pm on his bike and ride through the desert into the night. He would get to San Diego around 4am and start his hike. I remember thinking at first it was crazy! But after seeing him do this time and time again I realized it didn’t exhaust him, it exhilarated him. He found freedom on the open road and he loved the ride. I also believe that seeing his mother Doris made him feel grounded. You could see how close they were and they had a very special relationship. After his hike they would spend time talking, eating, laughing, and playing the piano. He was the only one who could jam on the piano just like her. He found comfort in her and always took the time to check on her, and show her that he loved her. I find comfort in knowing he took the time to do things that made him feel grounded. He always took the time to make people feel loved and make sure they were ok. He demonstrated such an important part of a life well lived and I think we can all learn a little bit from that. Rest In Peace sweet Uncle Jim. 

JIM WAS A GREAT BIG BROTHER-IN-LAW.  I REMEMBER WHEN HE WOULD COME OVER AND HELP BUILD A TREE HOUSE FOR ME AND MY SIBLINGS.  WE LOVED IT.  I DON'T THINK HE EVER FINISHED IT.  WE STILL HAD FUN PLAYING IN IT.  I ALSO REMEMBER WHEN HE HELPED MAKE THE GROTTO BY OUR LAKE.  MY PARENTS LOVED THAT. HE ALSO CAME WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY  WHEN MY FAMILY WAS ON VACATION IN TOMAHAWK. WE HAD A FUN DAY.   YOU CAN SEE IN MANY THINGS THAT HE DID, THAT HE LOVED ROSIE AND THE FAMILY.  HE WILL BE TRULY MISSED.

To Dad,

You had a great life.  So many 'ventures.  So many people who loved you.  You were my Daddy but so much more...my mentor, my advice giver, my best friend.  Life will go on now, but the hole in my heart will never be filled.

I will remember our great adventures - just you and me.....43 POST College 2-3 night road trips  - over 50 more day trips and 100's of local hikes.  I will never forget our incredible conversations.

Photo: Our last big adventure: Leech Lake, Minnesota.  Dad quickly caught +/-20 fish ...one after another...incredible.  We wouldn't let Dad go in (poor guy  had to go to the bathroom) until he caught 50 Fish.  He thought about challenge, shrugged, and said "Okay." & went on fishing - Mike & I just drank beer, cheered & enjoyed Dad....with 50th Fish in boat, his pole dipped in water and he caught #51!


To the entire Asher family,
My deepest condolences on Jim's passing. I grew up across from the huge Asher clan on 28th Street in San Diego. I played with the youngest  Asher and only girl, Mary. We had lots of fun playing school in the upstairs sun room. Jim was the oldest of the six boys and ruled the roost as a result. I will remember him as someone who took his role-model status very seriously. I was intrigued by that, being the youngest of three girls. Rest in peace, Jim! You made a difference in the world. 

My favorite memory of Grandpa was when he would take me on a hike. And as a reward for going with him we would go to McDonalds and always get a strawberry banana smoothie. 

I will always remember my Grandpa for his great love of the outdoors, and the passion he had in sharing it with all of his grandchildren. Some of my fondest memories with him were our hikes around the loop next to our house. When we were little we would get all excited to go, packing snacks and water eagerly anticipating the actual hike. During the hikes he would teach us to identify the different kinds of cactus, look at the little lizards basking in the sun, listen to the symphonies of the desert, and tell us his famous stories. The way he told his stories was unlike anyone else I’ve ever met. Each of his expressions would be perfectly executed, ensuring that he was keeping all of his audiences captivated in the narrative. My favorite one was always Purple Passion, especially seeing the frustration it brought out in his audience each time he told it. After each hike Grandpa would take us to McDonalds and buy us each a strawberry banana smoothie as a reward for our “tough work.” We would slurp them down in seconds and be contently satisfied with going on hikes every weekend with our Grandpa. I hope to be able to share his love of nature, stories, and strawberry banana smoothies with my brothers, cousins, and any family members just as he has shared them with me. Love you Grandpa. ❤️ 

I will also always remember how attentive he was at babysitting (picture below) ;)

I thank you much for telling me  that the man who  carried me into your office when I couldn't walk in was a keeper .  I married him and he was the love of my life.  I lost him to cancer 10 years ago, but you gave me the most wonderful 20 years of my life.  You were an amazing healer and  beautiful person.  Till we meet again in heaven my friend I'll be thinking of you  Jim


Dr. Asher, “Jim” was a beloved friend to all who  have served and continue to serve a First Way Pregnancy Center. He started the Men’s Program at First Way and was a pioneer in teaching about the importance of ministering to men when it came to family responsibilities and life!
His dedication to the issues concerning ProLife were a driving force in his own life. 
We are grateful for his service to First Way and for his influence on others in ProLife work. 
We will miss him. 
Our hearts and prayers are with Rose and the entire Asher Family.

To the Asher family:
     I am another of James' St. Augustine classmates, and, like them, an admirer.  I have not had much contact with him in the years since our time at Saints, save for occasional and always enjoyable class reunions.  I have marveled of late, however, at the strength of his faith as he faced what he so strikingly called his "summons," and shared his reflections on a death he knew to be coming .  I am sure that this is even truer for you who have had the good fortune to grow up and older with him at such close quarters.  A life as integral and well-lived as his, with its inevitable mix of joy and sorrow, is a source of inspiration and consolation for us all.  
     May God bless us all with pleasant memories, and with gratitude for his having been a part of our lives.  

Dear Rose and family-

I was very sorry to learn of Jim's passing.  We went to school together at Saint Augustine in San Diego, and Jim was always one of my favorite persons.  He was friendly, courteous, had a great sense of humor, and always had a nice word to say about people.  He was also extremely curious in a wonderfully innocent way.  It was fun "growing up" with Jim.  I often regret not staying closer to him as we each pursued our careers and raised our families.  One of the most impactful things I've ever read about life and dying I learned from Jim's commentaries on the subject.  They were beautifully expressed and full of meaning.  Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.  I hope in the difficult days ahead that the good and happy memories you had together will help you through each day.
