I first met Jesse when he was 19.  I was temporarily put in charge of the agency network, after the network administrator was fired.  Brett suggested that we hire him to help take care of the network and the users until we hired someone permanent.

Brett related a story about Jesse when he was younger.  It seemed that Jesse had a video game some years ago, that was a shoot 'em up cowboys and indians game.  The cowboys always won.  This (apparently) did not sit too well with Jesse, either because of a sense of fairness that the indians should win a few or because Jesse just wanted to horse around.  He got into the source code of the game and re-engineered it so that the indians beat out the cowboys when they were at war.  

Jesse quickly became a fast favorite at the agency, as he likely knew more about computers than the former network administrator did.  Maintaining the software and network, he also found time to fix user problems, and made instant friends.  The word "genius" I think is overused.  Among those who might be considered a genius, Jesse had an intellect which I have seen but a few times in my life. 

I saw him off and on over the next nearly 20 years.  I watched, sometimes from a distance, as he struggled with mental health issues.  Doubtless, those issues kept him from any number of successful careers which he may have pursued.    

His life was too short.  I learned something of value from it, about love.  There is little question that he was devoted to and loved his dad.  As I watched his father over the years, I saw the love for a child matched by a tough love as dad advocated for his son.  An advocate that sometimes was in concert with Jesse, and sometimes not.  Illness, mental and otherwise takes from us.  Love, in its various forms, fills life's potholes.

I will remember him as that tall, good looking young man, as I first met him.  His intelligence and quick wit left an impression upon you which is not easily forgotten.  And, that dry humor which left you with a laugh.

Brett,

When we worked bees this weekend, you talked about how the bee yard reminded you of recently working bees there with Jesse.  You spoke of how much you miss him.  

You introduced Jesse to beekeeping at a very early age.  (Probably as young as when your mother introduced you to beekeeping.)  Although I didn't know Jesse well, I do know from speaking with him, that you instilled your passion for beekeeping in him.  It was also evident to me how much he loved and admired his father.  

The first time I met Jesse, he taught me that my tennis shoe color (black) was not a good choice for working bees, because the bees don't like dark colors.  He was right!  

I know that throughout your life you will often think of Jesse and the love of beekeeping that the two of you shared.  I hope those memories bring you comfort.  God bless you and your family.

Dear Jana, Don, Brett, Andrew, Kindra and Joy - Jana and Brett, high school sweethearts, if you'll pardon my taking the liberty, you gave us our "first" of many children from our old high school crowd, so Jesse was always special, (as are you Andrew and Kindra, but Jesse got there first.)  Katie and I were remembering what a charmer and flirt Jesse was when he was little... that wonderful smile that could brighten the room and lighten your heart and basically get you to do anything he wanted you to.  Other memories include his ability to delve into things with such seriousness and intensity and then how patiently he would explain it to me...how he could be sweeter than the bee's honey he harvested...his mischieviousness and what a kick he got out of being taller than me so he'd stand with his arm draped across my shoulders to emphasize it....how he enjoyed being the big brother to Andrew and then Kindra...and then uncle ... his poetry,.. and how hard he fought the demons that could darken his sensitive soul.... the privilege of sharing in his and Joy's wedding day....and that last jar of honey he made sure I got before I left town.  Thank you for sharing Jesse with us.   May the love that surrounds you still bring you comfort along with our shared belief that Jesse is at peace.  God bless you, Jesse.

In your memory Jesse, I light this candle, it is the closets thing to a rocket engine I could fine.

I am very sorry to hear about Jesse's death.  I know you did all you could to work with him so you cannot blame yourself for what has happened.  When I think of Jesse I will remember the good things.  The visit you guys made to New Hampshire and the fishing trips we went on.  I'll remember the kid who introduced me to the then new PC's, DOS and UNIX operating systems.  Computer systems I was totally ignorant of back then having only worked with mainframe systems.  That introduction started me in a direction that kept me employed in a rapidly changing field right up until my stroke….I will miss him.

We were so sorry to hear of the loss of Jesse and hope that you and your family know that he is finally at peace.

Dear Jana and family,

I have been thinking about Jesse. I realize how many of my memories of him are from his childhood, and I regret that I didn't know him better as he became a young man and then an adult. I guess that's one big drawback of moving across the country.

But I did have a chance to spend several hours with him two years ago, when he and I went with Jana, Beth, Sheyanne (sp?) and Ryland to the zoo and butterfly garden. We talked about school, as he'd just started a class having to do with the environment and was taking notes from the zoo. When we went out to eat later, Jesse was all light and smiles as he held Ryland. When he fed him using the “open the garage door” ploy, both Jesse and Ryland were laughing happily.  

Jana, you were my first friend to have a baby, and so Jesse was the only baby in my life through my 20s. The first time I met him, when I came home from college on break, he seemed to know me. I found out that you'd put pictures of family and friends, low on the wall where he could see them, and talked to him about each of us. I was so thrilled that he knew me!

As he got older, he'd show me around the yard, with all the critters he helped take care of – rabbits, quail, bees. I was impressed that he could tell me all about them.

Many of my memories of Jesse are from when he was around 5 to 8 or 9 years old. Once the adults were talking about what to do for dinner, but none of us had much money on us. Suddenly Jesse said he had money, and he'd take us out for Mexican food. He was completely serious – he had allowance saved up, and he wanted to pay for our dinner. 

Another time, in San Diego, we had made it out to a Mexican restaurant in Ocean Beach, and Jesse sat next to me. I can't remember what he wanted – I think to play a game, and I was not complying. He looked up at me out of the corners of his eyes, smiling, head tipped charmingly – and suddenly I realized he was batting his eyes at me! “He's flirting with me!” I exclaimed. “Yes, he is!” Jana said. I guess you all were used to it, but it was the first time a 6-year-old had flirted with me, and I was indeed swept off my feet.

And though I know you've heard this before, this story has come back to me many times over the years. Again during a visit to San Diego, we had gone to an outdoor concert at the Wild Animal Park. It was a hot, bright day, and the singer was Roy Orbison, whom none of us had seen perform before. When Orbison came out on stage, I thought he was a woman, one of the band. Only when he started singing did I recognize his trademark voice and realize that this pasty-white man with black hair in a Dutch-boy cut was Orbison. Jesse lay on a blanket with his head under one of our chairs in the shade, appearing to be asleep. At some point, I said, “Roy Orbison has got to be the strangest looking man I've ever seen.” And from under the chair, Jesse responded dreamily, “He sure can sing, though.” And I was utterly and gently humbled.

I am so sad that these memories are all I'll have now. But I'm so blessed to have had Jesse in my life, and I'll treasure these memories and all that you share with me over the coming years.
