

Dr. Laura Ann (Slagter) Olvey, PhD, passed to heaven on January 28, 2013 in Phoenix, Arizona. Laura was born on April 18, 1961 in Evansville, Indiana. Laura was the daughter of Arthur John Slagter III and Katherine Anne Fitzgibbon. She graduated from the Evansville Day School (High School). Laura married William B. Olvey at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church on June 20, 1980 in Evansville. She has a daughter, Ariel Mae Olvey, born on March 18, 1998 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Laura studied at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She received her B.S.E. in 1984 and M.S. in 1986 in Nuclear Engineering. She was awarded a doctorial fellowship from Northwestern working at Argonne National Laboratory performing Neutron Transport Calculations. She received her Ph.D. in Physics from Northwestern University in 1989. After obtaining her Ph.D., she was awarded a post-doctorial fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory. After one year, she received her security clearance and went to work in the thermonuclear design group developing nuclear devices. As a member in good-standing in the American Nuclear Society, she has published articles in journals such as Nuclear Science and Engineering. Laura enjoyed riding her American Quarter Horse, a palomino mare named Rosie. Laura is survived by her husband, William; daughter, Ariel; four brothers: John, Philip, Michael, and Matthew Slagter; three nephews; John, Nick, and Joe Slagter; and five nieces: Cindy, Dawn, Chesey, Jill, and Allie Slagter. A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 9th from 2:00 - 4:00 PM at A.L. Moore Grimshaw Mortuary, 710 W. Bethany Home Rd., in Phoenix.
