

On Monday, May 24, 2021 Leon Dick, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at the age of 87 in Phoenix, Arizona. Leon was born on January 5, 1934 in Angola, Indiana to Marion and Ella Dick. He graduated from Coldwater High School in Coldwater, Michigan and married his high school sweetheart, Joan Miller, on July 4th of that same year.
Leon joined the Army in July 1954 and attended Army Security Agency School and served as a Morse Interceptor in Okinawa until July 1956. After returning, Leon studied Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics at Spartan Aviation in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He worked as a mechanic and pilot with multiple commercial aircraft carriers across Arizona, Nevada, and Alaska. In Alaska he and wife, Joan, owned and operated the Deshka Silver-King Lodge near Willow, Alaska hosting fishing enthusiasts from around the globe. In 1994, he retired to Arizona where he developed and patented the Volcin Engine, proving a prototype V6 engine could burn fuels more efficiently with emissions far below clean air standards.
Leon is preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Ella Dick and Uncle Donald Dick. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joan Dick, children Ken Dick (Michelle) of Seattle, Washington and Teresa Zinck (Brian) of Nikiski, Alaska as well as four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother Richard Dick (Micki) and sister, Jean Fox (Ken) plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and close friends.
Leon will be buried with military honors at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona (23029 Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85024) on Friday, June 4, 2021 at 12:30 p.m. Friends and family are invited to the family home afterwards for the last of Leon’s famous barbecues.
