Hi, I’m Lillian. On September 24th, 1929 my parents, Ed and Fae Schmit and my older sister, Gerry, welcomed me into their world. I was named Lillian Elaine Schmit, however, unlike my sister who was named after my mother, my name just came out of the blue (kind of like me). The following year my brother Ed, Jr. was born (guess who he was named after) and then in my twelfth year my parents gave me a living baby doll, my brother Galen. I loved life on the farm in Minnesota until finishing my junior year at Pillager High. Much to my chagrin, however, I had to move with the folks to Prescott where I graduated from High School.
Life truly started when I moved to the big town of Phoenix the following year. I was a nanny for a doctor and his wife while I attended Lamson’s Business School. While there, Fred Moore was captivated when, “I saw that cute little fanny walking down the hallway.” That was the beginning of the roller coaster ride of my life. Why, who else hitch-hikes to New Mexico just to get married, especially if you don’t “have to”? Ah, but for love…one that lasted until he moved to Heaven in 2002.
Fred and I were lucky to have four beautiful babies: Peggy, Debbie, Freddie Kay and Annette. Every Sunday I took them to Mass, then came home and made apple pie, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. My babies loved my cooking!
I didn’t go to work until the babies were more self-sufficient. I loved working at Honeywell. There was never a day I didn’t want to go to work, even if it meant driving the golf cart Fred fixed up (complete with a red and white surrey with fringed top). Working 7 to 3 on the assembly line soldering computer circuit boards was perfect for getting to know all the ladies, their children, and sharing homemade goodies. Laughter was the main ingredient in our recipe for a happy career.
When Fred joined the Shriners, I got to reveal my dancing talent with the Ladies of the Nile. I travelled and enjoyed wonderful times with all the ladies while raising funds for the Shriners Hospitals.
My life took on new meaning when the grandbabies came. First, Christopher, then Stephanie, Cale, Amy, Danielle and Shane. They enriched my life even more with children of their own…nine to be exact.
Yes, I have had a blessed life. Even more now that I get to go to heaven and see everyone I love who got there before me! I hope to see you there someday too...not too soon though, you all have a lot of living left to do. Just remember to smile, pray, and stand up straight, darn it!
