Maria G. Nelson of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on Monday, March 18, 2024, at the age of 78 after a very short battle with cancer. She was born on August 5, 1945 in Kingsville, Texas. She grew up surrounded by her grandparents that loved and cared for her dearly, in Brownsville, Texas. Mary worked as a Head Cosmetician for Walgreens for more than 30 years, most recently at the 3rd Street and Bell Road location. Everyone knew her as Mary and she was recognized (most places she went) by her loyal customers.
Mary was a professional dancer, performing from a young age at many different venues in Texas, Mexico and Arizona. She saw, danced and performed with many of the greats of her time, including Tito Puente. She was offered a position as a Rockette but declined. She loved dancing so much, taking every opportunity to do so.
Mary loved everything Egyptian from a very young age. She collected many different items that spoke to her throughout the years. No item was too big or too small for her to find a spot for. She always wanted to visit Egypt but sadly, never got to make the trip.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Guadalupe and Elisa Davila; her much loved, younger brother Hector Davila; her doting grandparents and her favorite Aunt, Lila Fragosa.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 51 years James W. Nelson; her sister Diana Lopez of Texas; her daughters Debbie Oliver of Phoenix, Arizona; Rosey (and spouse Jerry) Martinez of Dallas, Texas; Dee Valadez of Phoenix, Arizona; and all her grandchildren Kai, Mikaylah, Taylor, Nathaniel, Seth and Destiny.
Family and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at Phoenix Memorial Park & Mortuary, 200 W. Beardsley Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85027 on Friday, April 5, 2024 at 4:00 PM.
