It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mark Otto Bruemmer, father, grandfather, friend and a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Mark, 77, passed away peacefully at home with his daughter Renee by his side on February 27, 2025.
Mark was born on August 20, 1947 in Washington, Missouri. He grew up in Oak Lawn, Illinois with three brothers: Raymond, Paul and Theon. His parents Raymond and Adell Bruemmer predecease him in death.
Mark served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, earning many medals for his bravery and dedication. He earned: the Bronze Star, an Army Combat Infantry Badge, an Army Commendation Medal, Two Purple Hearts, a National Defense Service Medal and a Vietnam Service Medal. Though he seldom spoke about his time in Vietnam due to the trauma he endured, he remained proud of his combat service throughout his life. After returning from Vietnam, Mark worked as a skilled diesel mechanic for UPS.
He is survived by his 5 children: Rob (Florence), Renee, Ryan, Rhonda, and Randy (Julia). He had 7 grandchildren: Florence, Andrea (Zac), Amber, Lillian (Chris), Caitlin, Cole, and Maggie. He also has three great-grandchildren. His legacy will live on through his family.
Renee would like to extend her deepest gratitude to his caregivers: Antoinae, Christine, Heather, Marsha and Rachelle from Assisting Hands for their compassionate care and support. Their dedication and kindness made difficult times a little easier for her and her Mark. Special thanks to Hospice of the Valley, including his nurse, Kirsta.
Mark’s final years were filled with joy, peace and dignity, thanks to the kindness and care he received from family friends Nikki Bektic and Jessica Manion.
Mark’s spirit and memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Although we say goodbye, his service and sacrifices will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in peace, Dad, you are dearly missed.
Mark will be laid to rest at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
