This is a message from David Bown of Bedfordshire, England. I knew of Randy through my mother Jean Bown, nee Fells, who was a pen pal of Randy’s mother Mildred. They started writing to each other during the Second World War, and continued doing so for the next sixty years until my mother passed in 2006. Randy and I wrote to each other during the 1960’s. Randy was the most soft-spoken man I have ever known. He was kind, selfless, genuine, and unwavering in his faith. His wholehearted love for his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his family, and the friends he considered family was truly unmatched.

Anyone who knew Randy knows this. I can’t imagine anyone ever debating those qualities — they were simply who he was.

I have so many memories of Randy over the last 20 years. There are countless projects at the various funeral homes throughout Phoenix that I can look at and instantly think, Randy did that. There are so many conversations I can recall that still bring a smile to my face.

I’m going to miss him telling me, “You know, I pray for you every day, Mickie, because I want to see my friend in heaven.” I’m going to miss hearing him answer the phone with that familiar, gentle voice — “Hello, this is Randy Vogel.” I used to tease him and say, “I know who this is, Randy.”

Rest in peace, my dear friend. You will never leave my heart, and you will always be close in my thoughts.

Thank you, Lori, Colin, and Bronwen, for not only sharing him with us, but for driving him to countless projects over the years and sharing some of your personal stories about him. I will cherish this memories.

I met Randy 10 years ago, and always knew him to be kind, a tireless worker, patient even in the face of frustrating circumstances, and disarmingly soft spoken.  

I never knew the end of our friendship was approaching, and this news upsets me terribly.  If I could talk to him one more time, I would tell him how much I respect him and appreciate  how he carried himself and treated me and others.  I will miss him, and I wish I had a chance to tell him these things directly.

Randy was a great man. 
I spent many hours talking with him about Life, Health, Dogs, and all things spiritual.

He will be missed, 
and also PJ that was never far away lying on the floor listening.

Randy held a special place in this world as a kind, humble and generous man.  A skilled carpenter and contractor.   My heartfelt condolences to your family.  What an absolutely wonderful person heaven has gained.  My thoughts and prayers are with Randy's family and also community that will miss him dearly.

I'll always remember Randy as a kind and caring person, usually going out of his way to say hi and chat for few minutes while working on a job, and I often marveled at how calm he and P.J. were every time. His outlook on life taught me a lot and I will miss both of them.
