We lost a great shipmate and I lost a beloved uncle this past week.  Reynolds G Sprague a retired YNC and NIS agent (now called NCIS)with a combined Naval service of 38 years passed away Thursday July 21, 2022 at the age of 89
Although a Yeoman he spent little time behind a desk. My Uncle Roni wore a Trident on his uniform. He was one of the first group of UDTs (Underwater Demolition Teams) aka Frogman out of Little Creek in the 1950s. Which the UDT were the precursor to Navy SEALS. 
He had assignments with the CIA where he spent time on the East German side of the Berlin Wall.  He once told me the story when they issued cyanide tablets before he went into the field in case of capture. My smart ass uncle always quick with a sarcastic remark, he asked do these melt in my mouth and not in my hand.  He told me the CIA officer was not amused. 
As a YNC he had an assignment at the Pentagon where he his duties included carrying a briefcase handcuffed to his wrist.  And traveled back and forth with it from the Pentagon to the White House. 
I just found out from my cousin he was shot during Korean War and also had also had a hand grenade go off next to him. He refused to accept the purple heart for his injuries because the majority of his unit didn’t make it. 
He was a prolific model ship builder and built 100s of them. This was his “Therapy “. My favorite ship model he built and his favorite too, was of the USS New Jersey. Probably because we are from NJ. He mounted this ship for display on a piece of the teak decking he found in a dumpster during the refurbishment of the ship in the 1980s when she was pulled back into service again. He found the discarded decking when he was doing a base security survey for NIS. Fair Winds and Following Seas Shipmate
