Robert “Jake” Weinhold, 87, of Tempe, passed away July 24, 2017, in his home surrounded by loved ones. Jake was the fourth of seven children born to Reverend T.A. Weinhold and Magdalena Spilker Weinhold on January 4, 1930 in St. Louis, Missouri. He married the love of his life, Peggy Lou Hughes, July 20, 1953. Jake graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO in 1955, then was called to serve at St. Michael and All Angels Lutheran Church in Traverse City, MI (1955-1958). Jake was a professor of theology at Valparaiso University for twenty-three years. Jake was called to Arizona, and served as minister to Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church, in Pinetop. In 1984, Jake retired to the Valley of the Sun. In “retirement,” Jake first traveled to Chicago, for training and residency in substance abuse counseling at Lutheran General Hospital. After his residency, Jake returned to Arizona for a career as a substance abuse chaplain/counselor that spanned thirty-years; with most of those years at Valley Hope in Chandler. Jake was a grateful member of AA for 47 years, who loved traveling, swimming, laughing, and dessert, but his greatest love was his family. Jake was preceded in death by his parents, as well as sisters, Lois Hinseth and Grace Eggers, and brother, Ralph. Jake is survived by his wife, Peggy; three younger siblings -- J.D. Weinhold, Dorcas Schudlich, and Carol Wilken; his four children and three children-in-law -- Mark Luther, David Paul (Anne), James Matthew (Sue), and Krista Faith Noonan (Tim); nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Jake will be missed greatly, and loved for eternity.
Arrangements under the direction of Advantage Colonial Mortuary, Phoenix, AZ.
