As a young adult, Roy moved from Hong Kong to the United States (Phoenix, AZ) and became a U.S. citizen in 1981. Since that time, Roy spent his career as a Chef of Chinese cuisine, developing menus and kitchen inventory processes for some of the restaurants he worked. The highlight was having an entree menu item “Chef Roy’s Favorite Chicken” at P.F. Chang’s inaugural restaurant in Scottsdale, AZ.
Son of the late Sue and Tom Yan. Roy is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Tiffany, son Richard, daughter Lindsy Castro (Steven), and granddaughter Aria. Brother of Lee Chan (Ken), Raymond Yan (Amy), Bob Yan (Tan), Jennifer Nhieu (Pierre), Jack Yan. Uncle to many nieces and nephews. Cousin to many.
When not working, Roy was the hugest fan of new movies, in fact, up to his final days he was caught up on the latest Blu-Ray releases, his favorites being action movies and sci-fi, and of course Star Wars. He loved his rose garden. Roy had a huge passion for music his whole life, primarily the Beatles, but also Pink Floyd, Bee Gees, and Beach Boys. Finally, he enjoyed time with his family, spending time on FaceTime with his new granddaughter and sending many text messages.
