

Ruth Sly West, born April 2, 1929, in East Aurora, New York, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024, at the remarkable age of 95. Ruth grew up in East Aurora, where she developed the values of kindness and community that would guide her throughout her life. She later moved to Olmsted Falls, Ohio, where she built her family and career, leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and service.
A dedicated educator, Ruth taught 2nd grade at Wilcox Elementary in North Ridgeville, Ohio for over 35 years. Her passion for teaching and devotion to her students earned her the prestigious title of “Teacher of the Year” for the state of Ohio. Her impact on young minds spanned decades, shaping not just students but generations of families who were fortunate to know her. After her retirement, Ruth relocated to Sun City West, Arizona, where she embraced her next chapter with grace and joy.
Ruth is survived by her loving children: Barbara West of Scottsdale, AZ; Steven West (Pamela) of Memphis, TN; Andrea Kuenn (Arnold) of Phoenix, AZ and Gregory West of Scottsdale, AZ. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Joe Lucas, Samantha Lucas, Wesley Lucas (Ryan), Hillary Kuenn (Mike), Bradley Kuenn (Vanessa), Cameron West (Bethany), Gwen Bray (Eric), and Ryan West. Her role as a great-grandmother brought her immense joy. She cherished her time with her great-grandchildren: Aiyana Lucas, Cassidy Piccinini, Noah Kuenn, Arlo Kuenn, CJ West, and Isabelle West.
Ruth’s life was filled with warmth, kindness, and a deep love for her family and friends. In honor of her wishes, no formal services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations to a hospice of your choice are greatly appreciated, as Ruth believed in the compassionate care they provide.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
