Sibyl Masterson

Sibyl was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 15, 1929, to parents George and Gladys Barth. As a girl she spent a lot of time with her extended family and close cousins. Throughout her youth, she served within her church and community organizations like Job’s Daughters. In 1945, at age 16, she moved with her parents to Mesa, Arizona.

While attending Mesa High School, she soon fell in love with “a hunk of a man,’’ John Masterson, whom she married, January 10, 1948. They had two children, a son John David (‘48) and a daughter Carol Lynn (‘51). Sibyl and her family were very active volunteering at church and with the Methodist Youth Fellowship for several years. She also volunteered with The Red Cross which led her to pursue a nursing degree at 40 years old. In 1970, she graduated from the Mesa Community College, Practical Nursing Program and proudly served as an RN for over 25 years.

She lived an active lifestyle, loved to travel and spend time in the outdoors cross country skiing, gardening, camping, hunting, and fishing. After 50 years together, her husband John passed away (’97) and she found love again in a dear friend, Norman Outcalt (’00). They were committed to each other for 17 years until he passed. In their time together they traveled, spent time with their families and stayed active in their community.

Sibyl is remembered by her family for being small but mighty. She was fiercely proud and protective of her family, a loyal friend, loving mother and grandmother. Her grandkids remember her servant attitude as the matriarch of the family who worked tirelessly to create memories and experiences with her and their Grandpa John on the lake and summers in Colorado. Their passion to live and experience life lives on in all of us.

Sibyl was preceded in death by her parents, George & Gladys Barth, her first husband of 50 years, John Masterson, her second husband of 17 years, Norman Outcalt and her son, John David Masterson. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Uhland, her grandchildren, Lance (Nichole) Uhland, Michael Masterson, Andrew Masterson, Brandon (Heidi) Figg, Kris (Yvonne) Masterson, Jamie (Chris) Johnson, her great-grandchildren, Noor, Gabe, Kloey (Brady), Sam (Mikayla), Sophey, Isaiah, Ruthey, Brayden, Eli, Emily, great-great-granddaughter, Charlotte and her many nieces and nephews and their families.

A celebration of life for Sibyl will be held Saturday, May 17, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, 719 North 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009.
