Thomas Stewart Drake, Jr., beloved father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on December 13, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 79, succumbing to complications from pneumonia.
Thomas, affectionately known as Tom, Tommy, and Grandpa Tommy, was born on September 27, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was raised in Southwest Philadelphia, the second of four sons born to Thomas Stewart Drake, Sr. and Margaret Mae Drake (née Finley). He always spoke fondly of his childhood, and the many shenanigans he got up to with his brothers and friends from the neighborhood.
Tom graduated from John Bartram High School in 1962, completing his formal education, but he spent his entire life learning everything he could about science, architecture, space exploration, history, and more, which he would happily discuss with anyone. He was the embodiment of courage and dedication, proudly serving his country as an Air Policeman in the United States Air Force, where he demonstrated unwavering commitment to duty and honor.
Tom married Deborah Kyle Baldwin in 1968, and they had two daughters, Tracey Kyle Drake and Meggan Carrie Drake. Though their marriage was not as permanent as they had planned, Tom remained a devoted father. He was a dedicated band parent and theater dad, and he took great pride in his daughters’ accomplishments. One of his greatest joys in life was stepping into the role of Dr. Spivey in a community theater production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest alongside his daughters when a cast member dropped out at the last minute.
His professional journey included 45 years of service at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery, beginning in 1969 when it was known as Atlantic, earning him the respect of his colleagues and superiors. He retired to Phoenix, Arizona, in 2014, and enjoyed reading, photography, scale model building, music, travel, and weekly games nights with his friends in his retirement.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Tracey and Meggan; his brothers, Robert Harry (Jody) Drake and Glenn Walter (Janice) Drake, who shared the joys and challenges of life with him; Sara and Carlton Hawkins, who were like a daughter and son-in-law to him; his granddaughter, Perri Hawkins, who meant the world to him; and countless cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Thomas Sr., and his older brother, Lawrence Edward Drake.
Tom's warm heart, kindness, and sense of humor endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. He had a unique ability to connect with people, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. His legacy of love, generosity, and resilience will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of those who were fortunate enough to share in his life.
Tom requested no service or memorial. We ask that you please light a candle and share any fond remembrances of him here on this memorial page.
Thomas Stewart Drake, Jr. will be deeply missed but never forgotten. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the eternal love of those who cherished him.
