Velma Ruth Timmons was born to Reverend Magellan and Mother Clara Washington on February 7, 1936 in Choudrant, Louisiana. This union was blessed with twelve children: Variee, Willie, Louise, Avie, Dorothy, Sophie, Magellan Jr., Martha, George, Joe, and Robert Lee.
A Time to Learn
Velma attended school at Teevy, but for most of her life she was a devoted mother and wife. She often sowed into the lives of others in her community. During her life time she never encountered a stranger, she had a very bold and confident way with words; and thus, strangers quickly became friends. Velma was a master in dealing with people, and she could often get anyone to give her anything she desired. She accepted Christ Jesus as her Lord & Savior at an early age and was a long time member of Bethlehem Baptist Church under the direction of the Honorable Revered Arthur Lee.
A Time to Love
December 26, 1951, Velma Ruth Timmons and Odis Timmons Sr. were wed in holy matrimony in Winnsboro, Louisiana; to this union twelve children were born: Patricia, Odis Jr., Bobby, Barbara, Nancy, James, Thomas, Ora, Dennis, Antoine, Geneva, and Jeanette. Velma loved her family dearly no matter how many challenges they faced. She was determined to be there for each child and grandchild as they strived to overcome life’s challenges. Her greatest joy was to hear of a new family member arriving, as well as seeing and spending quality time with each of her grandchildren. She made it a priority to infringe upon each of her grandchildren’s lives with wise advice.
A Time to Heal
Velma R. Timmons was expected to depart this life over seven years ago when doctors’ gave up hope after giving her a weeks’ worth of dialysis treatments for what they consider a rare blood and kidney disease; but little did they know God had a sovereign plan. The doctor met with the extended family to say, “Velma would not make it through the night”; they believed she was at death’s door. Velma was determined to fight as she declared to her granddaughter Felicia with one word, “LIVE.” Live, she did as she made it through seven more years. Live she did, as God granted us an extension of her life to make something’s right and set something’s in order. We the Timmons-Washington Families cannot complain as God has done so many great miracles for us.
A Time to Mourn
As Velma got closer to her transition to glory her family began the mourning process for her. As time kept slipping into the future Velma’s body begin to break down while her spirit was being renewed with the almighty God. She knew her time was at hand, so she finished her course with excellence, knowing that she was going to meet her maker and be reunited with love ones that had gone on before her.
