William Michael Toon

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of retired Fire Captain Paramedic William “Bill” Toon, age 78, of Phoenix, AZ. He passed away on August 2, 2022, surrounded by family reminiscing their favorite stories of him and listening to his favorite band, The Eagles.

Bill was an Arizona native who went to Saint Mary’s High School. He was a beloved husband of 42 years to his wife, Peggy. He dedicated his life to serving others; a heroic member of the Phoenix Fire Department for 36 years, he was one of only twelve members of the “Dirty Dozen,” the first paramedic class for Phoenix. He had a natural athletic ability and loved all sports. Above all, he loved playing racquetball and golf with the love of his life.

Bill lived his life full of joy and happiness. He loved to travel with his wife, and their bucket list— which they put a pretty big dent in— was to see the world. Spending time with his kids and grandkids was very important to him. Everywhere he went and everything he did, he left an impression on those he met. The greatest gift he provided to people who knew him was knowledge. He loved to teach others how to do something instead of doing it for them.

Bill will always be remembered not just for the love he had for everyone but for the memories he was willing to make with each one of us. He was the best of us and the perfect example of who we should all strive to be. He would give the shirt off his back if you needed it. To truly honor him, let go of the pain and make a memory with a loved one.

Bill was preceded in death by his son, Bill Toon, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his children, Jimmy Toon, David Toon, Bobby Toon, Not-so-Little David Grantham, Patty Mills, Tammy Ruiz, and Kim Grantham; his siblings, Much-Older-Sister Peggy Wolf, Gale Comer, and Gary Toon; and his twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren, all of whom he was very proud.

The Celebration of Life for retired Fire Captain Paramedic Bill (aka Tooner) Toon will be held on August 31, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ’s Church of the Valley, 15025 N. 19th Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85023.
