Melvin was born in Pickens to the late Lorenzo Keith and Hattie Susan Byars Evette. He served in the Army, and was a World War II Veteran. After his time in the military he married his late wife of 59 years, Zelma Barkley Evette. He worked for Singer/Ryobi for 42 years in management. He was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Pickens.
Melvin is survived by his daughter Jan Bishop (Joey).
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife; brothers Rufus, Ivey, Bruce, Claude, Lloyd, Milton, and Ernest Evette; his two sisters Lizzie Mae Dorr and Bertie Nealy.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 2:00 pm, at Dillard Funeral Home, 2402 Gentry Memorial Hwy, Pickens SC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm. A committal service with military honors will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
