Mike was a really nice guy.  We enjoyed chatting about Jesus, gardening and chickens.   It was a blessing to call him friend. We chatted or shared something interesting about every day. I’ll really miss him.  I’m so sorry for your loss and I will be wrapping the family in prayer.  

My daddy was so loved by so many. I will miss him forever. He was truly a one of a kind guy. The best daddy in the world. I love you daddy. I will see you again one day. Love always, your dove. ❤️

Mike took an interest in me soon after we met. Mike was like that, he just got along with everyone he came across. I think his particular interest in me was that I was a Yankee from Arvada, Colorado which is a  vastly different than a Rebel from Pickens. All my norms and way of life were different than his. Mike of course had a streak of rebel in him as we all know, and so did I, and I think that is why we hit it off like we did. Mike also like to mess with me in his South Carolina way. One memory (of many) comes to mind to exhibit how Mike liked to mess with me. Keith Druckenbrod, who was in the Navy with us, broke down in St. Augustine. He had called Mike to come down and help. Mike asked if I wanted to come along, so we both got in his car and drove to St. Augustine. After we got Keith’s car running we proceeded back home. We were on the interstate doing about 70mph heading home and Keith was driving in front of us. Mike gently glanced over at me with a cigarette in his left hand, calmly and relaxing back in the seat as he started to accelerate. He was getting up close to Keith’s bumper, still watching me and what my reaction would be. When I finally felt Mike was getting too close for my comfort, I asked him to slow it down. Mike kept accelerating with a smile on his face. Ok this is getting critical now, I was thinking, I yelled at Mike to slow down right as we made contact with Keith’s car. I totally flipped out and was yelling for Mike to stop this car so I could get out. He kept the pace up and bumped Keith’s car a couple more times enjoying me and my panic attack. The funny thing is that Keith didn’t seem to mind that Mike was bumping his car multiple times. Mike loved telling people this story about me. I have never met a person that was so even keeled as Mike. When he was mad, you could barely tell by his body language or his voice, however he wouldn’t hesitate to say what was on his mind.

Mike and I had to do aircraft fuel samples every morning. This was a task that no one really liked to do because the sampled jet fuel could get all over hands and arms and could make a mess. Well Mike had bought a used Diesel Volkswagen Rabbit and he had read somewhere that jet fuel is the same as diesel fuel. After he had learned this, he had to give it a try.  He would take extra fuel samples and Instead of dumping the sampled fuel in the jet fuel disposal tank, Mike would take the mostly full 5-gallon bucket out to his car and fill the tank with the jet fuel. It would spill out on the side of his car and get all over. It was always funny watching Mike sneak that 5-gallon bucket out to the parking lot to fill up his tank.
