John J. Schmidt, 99, of Baden, Pennsylvania, passed away on March 12, 2026. Born on March 7, 1927, John will be remembered as a hard-working, compassionate, generous, and faithful man whose steady presence and devotion to those he loved left a lasting mark on all who knew him.
John grew up during the Great Depression in West View, an upbringing that shaped his character and strengthened his resolve throughout his life. As a young adult, he boarded horses and owned 10 horses before he married; he sold his horses so he could marry his wife, Jane—an early reflection of the priorities that guided him for the rest of his years.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army at the end of World War II and served in Europe as a Motor Sergeant in charge of vehicles. Following his military service, John built a career working with heavy equipment for several home construction companies—work he often described in his own words as “moving dirt.” Through it all, he remained dependable and proud of an honest day’s work.
John was married to his wife, Jane, for 73 years. He was the father of Wilma Scott (Walt) and Andrew Schmidt (Cheri). He was the grandfather of five grandchildren: Laura, Kelly, Angelica, and Michael, and was the great-grandfather of Nathan, Benji, Caleb, and Gavin. John was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; his granddaughter, Princesa; his brothers, Robert and Francis; his sisters, Dolores and Mary; and his daughter-in-law, Cheri.
John was an avid hunter, and his greatest love was horses. He also greatly enjoyed spending time at auctions and flea markets, always drawn to the simple pleasure of finding something interesting and sharing the stories that came with it.
Visitation will be held at H.P. Brandt Funeral Home, Inc., 1032 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, on March 17, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
