Ruth Alice (Miller) Appleton, 95, of Ross Township, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2020, while under the care of St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Gibsonia.
Born April 14, 1924, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Franklin and Elizabeth (Wolfram) Miller. She was the former wife of Harlan Appleton.
Ruth was a military veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II. She enjoyed reading, crafts, crossword puzzles, Scrabble, drinking black coffee and cheering on the Steelers.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Pierina Appleton of Maine; five grandchildren, Heather Logan and her husband, Will, of Gibsonia; Crystal Card and her husband, Travis, of Maine; and Angela Appleton, Danyle Appleton and Pierina Appleton, all of Maine; a niece, Kathy Ross, of Easton, PA, and her son, Michael; three great-nephews, James Fazio and his wife, Jannelle, of Colorado; Dan Fazio and his wife, Kathleen Brenneman, of Zelienople; and William Doernberger Jr. and his wife, Kirsten, of California; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Edward Appleton and Larry Appleton; her brother, Robert Miller; and her sister, Betty Doernberger.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the H.P. Brandt Funeral Home, 1032 Perry Hwy, Pittsburgh. A funeral ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 11, at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at the Mount Royal Cemetery in Shaler Township. Memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s honor to North Hills Community Outreach, Butler VA Health Care System, or the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund.
