Richard was born October 13, 1930 in Douglas, Arizona and passed away at the age of 84 in Camino, California on Friday, August 28th, surrounded by his family. Richard is survived
by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Ann, and his sons, R. Scott Washington and wife Mary, Mark S. Washington and wife Jen, Steven P. Washington and wife Evy and daughters Kathleen L. Costa and husband Mark and Suzanne Washington and wife Consuelo. He is pre-deceased by his son Timothy E. Washington and parents, Richard Scott Blackburn Washington and Mabel A. Washington.
Grandpa "Dick" is also survived by his 11 grandchildren, Timothy and Erika Washington, Marci, Amanda and Cheryl Washington, Antonia Washington, Sara Washington, Christine Zippert (Chris), Alicia Kirkman (Mike), John Costa, Matthew Costa and 4 great-grand children, Drake Mixon, James Berry, Markus Costa and Winifred Zippert.
Richard grew up in Douglas, Arizona, where he and Patricia were high school sweethearts. Together they went on to attend University of Arizona, where Richard completed ROTC and served in the US Army, training in Fort Knox Kentucky, prior to being deployed to Japan during the Korean War. He was a Unit Tank Commander with the 1st Cavalry Division, 7th Cavalry Regiment, Armor Division. Dick was very honored and proud of his military service.
After leaving the military he resumed his work as a Police Officer for the City of Tucson, and then went on to enjoy a long career as an insurance adjuster and manager with GAB and Cigna. His career kept he and Pat moving as they left Douglas for Alamogordo New Mexico, then Merced, Mountain View, Concord and Camino, California. Richard and Pat raised their large family in Concord for over 25 years before retiring to the mountains that Richard loved in Camino California for 30 years.
Richard loved the woods, hiking, fishing, swimming, camping, woodworking, reading, his dogs and family. He remembered fondly serving on the US Census committee and Audubon Hills Road Committee in his retirement. He was often seen in downtown Placerville, helping Pat with her Antique business, Window Box Antiques.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Placerville, at Sacramento and Fiske Streets at 11 am on Thursday, Sept. 3rd. Arrangements entrusted to Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home, Placerville.
