Vera A. Becker passed away to her well deserved eternal reward at 94 peacefully, in her sleep on January 12, 2019 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Elvira Ziolkowski was born Oct. 24, 1924 in Queens, New York. Her parents emigrated from Poland early in the century and Vera got a chance to visit Poland in the early 1930's with her mother. She lost her mother to cancer soon after, and that event forever intensified the love she brought to all her subsequent relationships.
She grew up in New York City with her older brother Adrian and younger brother Jan. She was a quick student; she finished high school at 16, Queens College at 20. With her best friend Marie, and World War II still raging in 1944, she joined the Marines and became one of "the Few, the Proud." After being discharged she began work at a young and growing American Airlines in the city and met the love of her life,
Edward W. Becker.
They married in 1948, and had twenty great years together in the Long Island suburbs of a flourishing Nassau County until his sudden passing in 1968. Vera was a terrific mother, rejoining the work force and helping her children achieve her dream of a completed college education. Vera is survived by her four children and their spouses: Edward and Shelley, John and Diane, James and Lori Becker, and Connie and Stan McClure. There are also 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren now.
Vera got to live a wonderful and full life for which we, her sons and daughter are grateful and thankful to God to have shared with her. May she now rest with Him.
Arrangements for a funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mercy church in Hicksville, New York, and a burial with Edward W. Becker at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York are forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your local food pantry.
