It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Audrey Helen Inverarity Smith/McLeod on September 29, 2026. Audrey was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, activist, and friend.
Audrey dedicated her life to caring for others, working as a nurse until the age of 83. She was also a passionate advocate for human rights, social justice, women's rights, and animal rights, guided by her enduring belief in compassion, equality, and the importance of making a difference in the lives of others.
Audrey was first married to Frank Shackell, with whom she had three children: Frank Jaime, Lynne, and Nancy (Dave). She later married Peter J McLeod, and together they welcomed two more children: Greg (Tressa) and Laura (Chris). Audrey was a wonderful and loving wife and mother who cherished her family deeply.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 55 years, Peter J McLeod; five children; nine grandchildren (Isaiah, Matthew, Laura, Kyle, Lee, Julian, Adelle, Devon, and Oliver); and six great-grandchildren (Jayden, Kyle, Arielle, Amaya, Isai and Saii,), as well as many family members and friends who will cherish her memory.
Audrey was truly a student of life. Her natural curiosity and love of learning meant she was always discovering something new and learning all she could. She embraced life fully and could often be found cross-country skiing, running a marathon, biking, gardening, dancing, or simply enjoying a good book. She brought energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm to everything she did.
Audrey's kindness, strength, love of life, and commitment to helping others will live on in the many lives she touched.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Audrey's memory may be made to Parkinson Canada, the Montreal Zoo Ecomuseum, WWF, or UNICEF.
And knowing Audrey, she is probably already sitting down with Gloria Steinem, who also passed away this September, catching up and having one heck of a conversation about women's rights, equality, and what still needs to be changed.
