It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bernard (Bernie) Gillies on June 5th, 2021, just one week before his 96th birthday. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Madeleine Gillies (nee Murtagh).

Much cherished father of Bernie (Isabella), David, (Janice) and Brenda (Roger). Heartbroken to lose their sweet grandpa are Ian (Jen), Leah (Gabe), Jessica (Ashton), James (Angela), Ariane (Andrew), Christopher, Jonathan (Kelly), Jennifer (Alex), Andrew and great-grandchildren Jackson, Lily, Katie, Felix, Chelsea, Audrey, John and Scarlett. Predeceased by brother David (Karen) and sister Barbara (Leo). Dear big brother to Lorraine, Kathleen (Fred) and Gail. Uncle Bernie was very dearly loved by the many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. He will also be dearly missed by his special friend, Joan Fitzpatrick.

Bernie was a WWII veteran, a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He had a long and distinguished career in the aviation industry, initially with Pratt & Whitney and held several senior positions with Air Canada as Vice President - Purchasing and Supply, Vice President - Maintenance and Engineering and Vice President – Cargo, and ultimately retiring as the Vice President – Facilities and Fuel Management. He was also the Chairman of the Air Transport Association of Canada Airport Affairs Committee and held Director positions on several other boards during his career.

Bernie led a very active life. He enjoyed travelling the world, golfing, playing bridge, curling and spending time with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed the company of his Friday night supper group of friends. He was an avid golfer and a long standing member of Summerlea Golf and Country Club as well as a longtime member of the Baie D'Urfe Curling Club. He will be sadly missed by his many close friends.

A private service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to NOVA or The West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped (WIAIH).
