Greg had struggled with a form of dementia for the last four years and is now finally at peace. He was predeceased by his parents Alvin Sleno and Phyllis Busby and leaves behind his brother Gary Sleno (Bernice), wife Mary Lee Trask (daughter Jill Murray (Rodrigue Duperron) and son Paul Murray (Anna-Maria Bartha)) and his four daughters, Melissa Sleno (Kyle Seles), Heidi Sleno (Mike Hicks), Shanti Supinski (Tom), and Lekha Sleno (Tony Sabetti). Those who called him Gramps were Bryanna, Kiara, Evan, Ryan, Aimeé, Nolan, Tyler, Liam, Laurel, Alice, and Andrew.
In his working life, Greg was an Accountant, Director of Finance and Operations. His career in the plumbing distribution division of Wolseley Canada spanned 40 years. His work fueled his care for his family and community – or perhaps it was the other way around. It was of great importance to Greg to provide well for his family, and he did so with love. He also used his accounting skills to volunteer with the West Island Volunteer Bureau, helping the local community with their taxes. Greg never hesitated to jump in to help someone get something done.
A strong thread running through Greg’s life was that he wouldn’t do anything unless he could do it well. He brought care, precision, and accuracy to everything he touched. He loved woodworking and building, and his expertise was clear to anyone lucky enough to be on the receiving end of a gift of frames, shelves, or a cabinet.
Greg loved sports, especially the thoughtful ones, with a lot of rules and strategy to master. A (very) competitive curler, he competed in the senior Nationals three times and worked as an exacting and dedicated umpire. He was an avid golfer and played slow-pitch softball for a quarter century before taking up lawn bowling. In moments of relaxation, he could usually be found watching a curling, golf, football, baseball, or hockey game, though, once in a while, a movie might break through – perhaps The Godfather or something starring Liam Neeson or Bruce Willis.
Greg enjoyed a lively soundtrack, especially while driving. Blues and Motown brought him the most joy, and he was particularly fond of songs like Georgia on My Mind and Hit the Road Jack, which became something of an emblem, after he made it his ringtone.
The family will have a private gathering in lieu of a funeral and we ask that donations be made to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence, Nova West Island, or the charity of your choice.
