Born on January 12, 1936, in Buffalo, New York, to Edward and Evelyn Hoffman, Margaret—known to many as "Marty"—was a graduate of Cornell University, earning a degree in Human Ecology in 1957. Marty began her professional life at the Buffalo Evening News as a copy editor. She later wrote a popular home and social advice column for the paper under the pen name Lucy Lincoln. She was widely recognized for her distinctive style, sharp wit, and her belief that good manners and consideration for others were vital skills.
She married William "Bill" Murnighan, Sr., in 1964, and they had two children, Alice and Bill, in Buffalo. The family relocated to the Montreal area in 1970, settling in Beaconsfield. Margaret returned to work in the early 1980s, spending nearly two decades at Avon Canada as a copywriter and contributing to the company’s catalogue publications. She developed many lasting friendships with colleagues during this time.
Margaret was known for her strong sense of independence. She was also a loyal friend, offering non-judgmental support and care to others. She was active in her neighbourhood, particularly among her generation of women on Alton Place. She always dressed with flair, including when she celebrated her 70th birthday by attending a Rolling Stones concert. She remained living independently until her recent illness.
Margaret was mother to Alice of California and Bill (Carol) of Toronto, and grandmother to Aoife of Montreal, in whom she took immense pride. She was aunt to Sandy, Pam, and Lori, and sister-in-law to Perry, all of the Buffalo area. She was predeceased by her husband, William, and her brother, Edward.
In keeping with Margaret’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Memories, photos, and messages of remembrance can be shared through this online guestbook.
