Donald Arthur Dare passed away peacefully on December 9th, 2020. He is survived by his
eldest daughter Dr. Kimberly Dare, FNP, son Steve Dare, his wife Trish and their two
daughters Taylor and Peyton and his youngest daughter Nicole Dare James and her two
children Ryan and Mia, as well as his sister Joyce Foust.
Born Feb 12th, 1931 in Peoria, Illinois, to Claude and Edna Dare, Don had one brother, Clyde
and one sister Joyce. He attended Piat County Public Schools, graduating from Bement High
School.
Don attended Bradley University in Peoria where he earned a position on the men’s
basketball team. He left college to serve his country and enlisted with the United States
Marine Corp. He served in the infantry division during the Korean War, where he was
awarded three Bronze Stars. After completing his service in the Marines, Don retuned to
Peoria and finished his degree from Bradley University. Don had a very successful career
working in the car manufacturing business, for Renault and Nissan, as the Vice President of
sales. In 1957 he met the love of his life, Irene Mustone. They married in 1958 and lived in
Chicago, Illinois. In 1969, Don and Irene relocated to Lighthouse Point, Florida where they
continued to raise their family, owned a successful specialty retail store, Western Auto, for
over 25 years and served their community through several volunteering opportunities.
Don was a generous man. He was generous with his love and his time, with which he
supported his family, friends and community. Don’s family was always top priority, he was a
generous, fun loving father and dedicated husband. He loved to support his children’s
sports and activities and often enjoyed coaching for the city baseball team. The love and
dedication that he gave to his family was a true testament to his character.
Don was an engaged and active member of his community. He was a member of the
Pompano Beach Exchange Club, an organization dedicated to helping people in need. He
developed a great many friendships through the Exchange Club and would often talk about
them with high regard. Don was also a board member for the Pompano Beach Housing
Authority who provided housing, opportunity and hope for lower income neighborhoods.
Together, he and Irene frequently volunteered serving food to the homeless at St. Gabriel’s
Church.
In 1992 Don sold his business and became a teacher for Broward County Schools GED
Program, serving his community as a dedicated teacher, mentor, and leader. Don retired in
2000, spending his time with his wife of 60 years, Irene, until she passed in 2018.
Throughout his retirement he enjoyed playing golf, as often as he could, with his many
friends at the Pompano Beach Golf Course, where he also worked as a golf starter for
several years. He continued to stay in touch with his friends until his passing.
Don lived a rich, full life. Always positive, he made people laugh with his quick wit and
charm and he always made it a point to bring someone a smile. He had a true love of service
to his family, his friends and his community and loved hearing about everyone’s successes.
Don was loved by many and left an incredible impact on this world. He will be missed
dearly.
Due to COVID restrictions, a memorial service will be held in the Spring.
