Doris was born in Dansville, New York to Walter and Helen Shutt on January 31, 1930. She was a graduate of Dansville Central High School and married Robert Teachout on August 1,1948 and together had 5 children. In her early years, Doris was a homemaker and sold Tupperware and Sarah Coventry Jewelry. She then went on to work at Rapid-Gro in Dansville and Wilmot Castle in Rochester, New York. The family relocated to Florida in 1972 where she was a corporate secretary for STP Corporation and also worked at the Pompano Harness Track for many years. Doris was a long time member of the North Creek Presbyterian Church and lived a faith-filled life. She was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the American Legion and the Eastern Star. She loved playing Bingo at the American Legion and the Community Center at her residence and delighted in visits from her family. Doris was an avid sports fan, especially Nascar and Hockey.
Predeceasing Doris were her parents, husbands Robert Teachout and Gerald Goodine, sister Lorraine Carver and brother Richard Shutt. Also predeceasing Doris were her sons-in-law Jerry White, Dennis Alongi, Darrell Campbell, and Jeff Merian.
She is survived by two sisters; Alice Conaway and Marian Kennell, her children; Mary White, Mona Alongi, Susan Campbell, Carol Merian and Paul (Dinah) Teachout. Doris was fortunate enough to have two Angels on earth. One being her daughter Carol who has cared for her Mother for several years, as her siblings resided out of state. In Doris’ final months and during the pandemic, Carol demonstrated her selflessness, love and dedication to keeping her safe. Doris’ second Angel was Karen Schindler. The family was extremely blessed when Karen came into their lives. She was a compassionate, patient, and dedicated caregiver to Doris for over 4 years and has become part of the family.
Doris’ children would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Jack A. Kravitz at Northwest Regional Medical Center for his kindness and guidance in the final days of their mother’s life.
A memorial service will be announced and held at a later date. At Doris’ request, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Victory Junction at victoryjunction.org, a non-profit organization founded by the Petty family in memory of Adam Petty for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.
