Ed enjoyed a long and successful career in public service as a federal regulator of hydropower projects for the Department of Energy. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Ed graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1963 with a degree in engineering. At 21, he moved to Pasadena, California, to work for the state Department of Water Resources, where he helped design and construct the California Aqueduct that, to date, transports water over 400 miles between Sacramento and Los Angeles. In 1971, he joined the U.S. Forest Service at Angeles National Forest as a supervisor in the Engineering Branch.
In 1976, Ed relocated to Derwood, Maryland, and began a 38-year career with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. In 2014, he retired as Director of the Division of Hydropower Administration and Compliance. Shortly thereafter, Ed moved to Pompano Beach, Florida, with his wife, Rebecca, where he spent his days living beachside, enjoying the heat and sun, and riding his Harley-Davidson.
Ed had a passion for his many hobbies, whether it was riding and tinkering with motorcycles, flying airplanes, playing drums, working with stained glass, woodworking, boating, or calligraphy. Ed was a tough guy who loved Clint Eastwood, but also had a soft spot for children and animals. Speaking of animals, he spent many hours at the dog park with his "nephew" Francis who adored him. He loved eating in diners, appreciated a good corned beef sandwich, and could polish off a thick rib-eye with the best of them.
In 2019, Ed became a cherished “Papa” to his only grandchild, Jack Joseph Abrams. Their favorite times together included watching airplanes take off at the BWI-Thurgood Marshall Airport playground, racing Hess trucks, and besting each other at stare down contests.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Rebecca; son, David Allen Abrams (Kathleen); sister, Sherry Dube; aunt, Ethel Melamut (Jerry); and a niece, nephews, cousins, and many friends from Maryland.
If you wish to send flowers, they may be sent to Rebecca at 1370 S. Ocean Blvd. Apt. 1603, Pompano Beach, FL 33062.
