

Laverne Samuel Blackard (age 96) of Pompano Beach, died October 5th, 2015. Beloved husband, father, teacher, soldier, craftsman, he was predeceased by his wife of seventy-one years, Wilma Johanson Blackard and their daughter, Marilyn Keating.
Mr. Blackard was born in Fort Branch, Indiana, January 17, 1919. He was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College 1941. Married in 1939, Mr. Blackard served in the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment as a sergeant in the European Theatre during World War Two. A squad leader, he directed men in combat and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. After the war he resumed teaching, moving to Pompano Beach in 1953. He taught wood shop and mathematics until his retirement.
He is survived by their sons, Dr. John Blackard (Gloria) Stuart, FL; David Blackard (Donna) Pompano Beach, FL; and Daughter Ruth Fox, Norfolk, VA; 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is yet to be scheduled.
