Friends described Bob as being “the last generation of great men.” Born on April 22, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert was known for his engaging personality, active lifestyle and strong family values. He was the lead man of his band, playing guitar and singing rock and roll favorites. Although asked to try out for the Baltimore Orioles given his baseball prowess, his family took priority, and he remained home in Chicago to care for his mother and Aunt. Robert started working for Aetna as a teenager where he met his wife, Beverly Boggs. While raising their two children, Kevin (1964) and Laureen (“Lori”) (1966), he put himself through night school to earn his associate’s degree. Once transferred to Peoria, he remained a devoted Chicago fan, cherished his family time and was a devoted father while maintaining his love for music and sports. He retired at the early age of 52 and eventually moved to Pompano Beach, Florida, where he continued to play tennis 3-5 days a week.
Robert is survived by his two children, Kevin Robert Nelson and Lori Beverly Destifanes, two grandchildren, Michael Robert Nelson (spouse Mesia Amanda Reed) and Danielle Marie Destifanes, great granddaughter Daphne Grace Nelson and great grandson Jasper Finnegan Nelson.
No services will be held. He will be cremated and laid to rest in the Ocean per his request.
To my dad,
I love you and will miss you. Your love was unconditional, and I am blessed to have you as my role model. I am grateful for all the time we spent together, teaching me to play sports, and while in Florida trying different lunch venues and sharing stories and laughter. You taught me so many things it is hard to list them all, from a strong work ethic to dealing with all walks of life and enjoying the ride. Always in my heart.
Love,
Lori
