Barbara Sue Matkins

Barbara Sue Matkins, age 72, died Sunday, January 31, 2016 at NMMC in Tupelo. She was born January 17, 1944 to William Horace O’Bannon and Margaret Evelyn McGregor O’Bannon in Blytheville, AR. She married Jimmy Matkins and they shared 55 years of marriage on December 16, 2015. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Thaxton and enjoyed attending church singings, cooking for church gatherings and making the costumes for all the church plays. She worked at Comfort Care in Pontotoc for many years. She was a Boy Scout Den Mother when her boys were small and her favorite hobbies were cooking and spending time with her family, sewing and reading her Bible.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with Rev. Jerry Hooper and Rev. Kenneth Bishop officiating; burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her husband: Jimmy (Skipper) Matkins,; her daughter: Connie Matkins Moore and husband Ed; two sons: Sammy Matkins and wife Sharia and Jimmy Dean Matkins, all of Thaxton, MS; her sister: Candy Robinson and husband Charlie of Pontotoc, MS; Wayne O’Bannon and Ogie of Pontotoc, MS, Tony O’Bannon and wife Elaine of Atlanta, GA and Michael O’Bannon and Cathy of Vardaman, MS; her brothers and sisters in law: Ronnie Miller, Carolyn Nichols and husband Tommy, Dorman Matkins and wife Marilyn, and Keith Matkins and wife Lois; six grandchildren: Greg Matkins, Kyle Matkins, Zach Matkins and wife Paula, Nikki Umfress and husband Joey, Storm Moore and Savanah Moore; and one great-grandchild: Jane Matkins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister: Melinda Miller; three brothers: Derwood O’Bannon, Malcolm O’Bannon and Jim O’Bannon; her mother-in-law and father-in-law: Ella Ree and L.V. Matkins and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Codene and Billy Waldo.

Pallbearers will be: Greg Matkins, Kyle Matkins, Zach Matkins, Storm Moore, Joey Umfress and Norman Nichols.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5 to 9 PM and Wednesday from 1 to 2 PM at the funeral home.
