Julia Anderson passed away on December 28, 2018. She loved working in gardens and in natural landscapes, working always to “fill the world with flowers.” As a Master Naturalist and a Licensed Landscape Gardener, she freely and gladly shared her knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm about the environs of the Mississippi Coastal Plain and about organic gardening. She will be remembered too for her lifelong volunteerism as a committed advocate for the environment. Julia was a founding board member of the Wolf River Conservation Society and of the Land Trust for the Mississippi Coastal Plain. She was instrumental in the conservation of environmentally and culturally significant lands. The preservation of the Shaw Homestead was especially important to her.
Julia was also an early and committed volunteer for the Crosby Arboretum, which she saw as a celebration of the environment she worked so hard to protect. Julia’s many friends will remember her talents for cooking wonderful and beautiful meals from the produce she grew. The shelves of her kitchen, as well as many other rooms where she lived, were filled with colorful, interesting and healthy canned goods. She knew a great deal about the health benefits of various herbs and plants and shared her knowledge with many.
Julia’s bright light has sadly gone dark. She will be missed by so many who looked to her as a friend, mentor, caretaker, colleague and fellow environmental advocate. In Julia’s honor, please take a moment to appreciate the natural world that is our home and to hug your friends and loved ones.
