October 18, 1946 – July 15, 2022
Gulfport, MS
Roger Wescott was born in Hartford, Connecticut on Oct 18, 1926 to the late Lynwood Hamilton Wescott and Mary Edna Wescott. He passed on July 15, 2022 in Gulfport, MS…shortly after making the move to the Armed Forces Retirement Home.
After living his formative years in the New England area, Roger enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant during his distinguished 22year career. It was during his stay @ Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, that he fell in love with the Gulf Coast. Just as noteworthy, he also fell in love with wife Sherrie, whom he married in 1980.
An active member of various churches, gourmet cooking and Mardi Gra clubs, he and Sherrie enjoyed hosting various parties and events…as they relished being surrounded by family and friends. These activities were made even more special during the holidays, especially after their sons married and their family grew larger.
After moving to CA in 2007, life took a drastic change when Roger’s wife, Sherrie passed away in 2013.
Although still surrounded by family, life without Sherrie created a void that he could never replace. Yet, he championed onward, continuing to be a great father, father-in-law and most notably, one helluva Pappaw.
After researching the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, MS, Roger thought it would be a good idea to move back to the Gulf Coast, and live in a community with kindred neighbors, veteran support groups and countless activities, not to mention being able to see the Gulf Coast again.
Unfortunately, he fell ill in mid-June, and although he was hopeful he could beat the odds, he was adamant that he “was right with God and ready.” Although his family wasn’t ready, we were amazed at the peace and certainty he displayed, which has helped in our grieving.
The world has lost a one-of-kind individual, whose quiet demeanor and wry sense of humor often masked his generous and caring soul. An outstanding man, who made his family and friends his top priority, has now been blessed by rejoining Sherrie, dancing at the gates of Heaven. He will be forever missed.
Memorials may be made in honor of Mr. Roger Wescott to the American Cancer Society, Real Life Church (reallifechurch.org) or charity of the donor’s choice.
Online Life Celebration will be on Sunday (8/14) @ 1:30pm/pst
