With love we sadly say goodbye to our dear mom, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. Doreen Fossen - Harlock (nee Smith) passed away peacefully at West Coast General Hospital on January 25, 2021 in Port Alberni at the age of 92.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband of almost 60 years, Del Fossen, in January 2006, her son Gary Fossen in October 2000, her granddaughter Katrina Acres in December 1997 and her dearly loved second husband Ian Harlock in August 2016. She is survived by her daughter Jeanne Smith of Port Alberni, her son Ted Fossen of Penticton, her brother Ted Smith (Carroll) of Naramata, her five grandchildren, Darren Kennedy (Charlene), Laurie Kennedy (Greg Simpson), Heidi Homan (Darren) of Port Alberni, Bobbie Fossen of Coquitlam and Jennifer Fossen of Victoria, six great grandchildren in Port Alberni and Whistler, her two half-brothers Ken and Len Smith of Duncan and numerous nieces and nephews.
Doreen (Dee) was born in Penticton BC. She grew up just north of there in Naramata. She and Del met and fell in love in 1945 and married in Penticton in 1946. They moved to Port Alberni in 1957 and lived there and Qualicum Beach for the rest of their lives. Dee was an avid gardener, golfer, artist and bridge player and was, for many years, a member of the Qualicum garden club and a judge in their garden shows. She was also active in the Eaglecrest golf club in Qualicum Beach where she captained her ladies golf group.
After Del’s passing in 2006 Dee moved into The Garden’s in Qualicum Beach and lived there, with a brief one year move to Port Alberni, until August 2020 when she moved in with her daughter Jeanne. During the first couple of years at the Garden’s Dee met Ian Harlock, who would become the second love of her life. They married in August 2009 and had 8 very happy years together until Ian’s passing in 2016.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. K. De Witt, Dr. S. Williams and Dr. W. Johnsen for their excellent and compassionate care.
Dee lived a full life, loved her family, pursued her interests with enthusiasm and vigor and took an interest in community affairs. She was strong and compassionate to the end and will be forever loved and missed by her family and friends.
