Predeceased by wife Jean and 3 brothers, Eric is survived by children Julian (Brenda), Ian (Denise), and Melanie (Neil); grandchildren Jason, Jessica (Ryan), Kara and Nathan; great grandchild Isabelle
Eric was born on Dec., 28th, 1922 in England. Eric was a very driven individual who joined the army to better himself at the age of 16 in 1938. He served in WWII with the 8th army in North Africa where he was wounded with the loss of an eye and the detriment of his hearing. After the war, he met the love of his life, Jean while they were both working on the buses – he as a driver and her as a ‘clippy’ – and they were married in 1948. In 1954 they immigrated to Canada with their son Julian. Just shortly after arriving in Ontario, all 3 survived Hurricane Hazel where they lost all their possessions and belongings. After picking themselves up again, they settled in Woodbridge Ontario, where Eric worked for DeHavilland as an electrician. In the late 50’s, he became a journeyman and would always say that he knew he had ‘made it’ because he was now earning $2/hour. After the birth of his son Ian and daughter Melanie, they moved to North Vancouver where he started the next chapter of his career with the BC Highways Dept. The family moved to Metchosin where he retired in 1983. In retirement, they enjoyed travelling and being members of the Studebaker Club. He was active in the community, volunteering for many years with the Metchosin Fire Department. After Jean passed away he spent his last years in Port Alberni.
Eric will be greatly missed by his loving family.
According to Eric’s wishes, no formal service will be held and a private family gathering will be held at a later date. Eric was a very generous man who donated to many charities. In lieu of flowers donations in Eric’s name may be made to a charity of your choice.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Echo Village in Port Alberni for their kindness, care and compassion during Eric’s stay there.
