My Nan (Joyce) and Hazel grew up in the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. Hazel was one of 6 siblings and sadly the first to pass away; Sheila 93, Nan 92, Norman 90, Phyllis 88, Hazel and Ian 75, it goes to show what a tough bunch Falkland Islanders are. 
Growing up in England we didn't really know about Hazel until 1996, when she and my Nan got in touch after about 50 years living on opposite sides of the world. She came to visit England a couple of times and my brother came over to Vancouver in 2001. In 2004 I came over to Canada with Luke and 2 close friends, Foxy and Bish for Kristie and Matt's wedding with Nan joining us there as well.
This is when I got to meet Hazel properly. Both her and Wally were so hospitable and they couldn't have done more for us. We all have very fond memories of our time with them playing games, drinking, dancing, Hazel flirting with Foxy and of course her wicked sense of humour. Those few days in Nanaimo and meeting our extended family and friends in Sproat lake really were the time of our lives. Both Hazel and Wally were a massive part of that, it's hard to believe it was nearly 12 years ago. 
I've probably only ever spent 10 days total in Hazel's company. Despite that it's very easy to see what a truly wonderful woman she was. I know she'll be missed dearly by all her family and friends, as she will be by me, my family and especially, her sister, my Nan. They regularly used to exchange hand written letters and photographs. 
I'll be raising a glass to you Saturday night Hazel. Hope you and Wally are having a good laugh wherever you are.

So thankful to have had you in our life. I have so many great memories of you Granny and I promise you won't be forgotten. Bella is so lucky to have been able to be so close with her great granny. Ryan is so happy you got to see all your grandchildren get married and happy with children of their own. One of a kind lady for sure

So glad we had the privilege of being part of such an extraordinary woman's life. She was truly one of a kind and I will always cherish my memories with her. I love you Granny, cheers to you and Wally ❤
