At 20, he enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed for two years in France. These were fond times and served to awaken his
adventuresome side.
Back in BC, he drifted between various jobs and places. An eventful “blind date” in 1960 changed his life forever; a year later, Jack
married his best friend and soul mate, Elizabeth “Betty” Reimer.
The promise of work brought the newlyweds to Zeballos - a small place that bore them gigantic memories. After settling in Port
Alberni, Jack endured short stints in the mill, real estate, and even as a tax clerk (which he hated). A job in the forest lured him to
MacMillan Bloedel where he remained as a forestry supervisor until his retirement in 1991.
On the home front, Jack was the proud father of two sons, Trevor and Jay. He enjoyed fatherhood and took his role seriously. He and Betty brought “the Boys” on road trips across North America and even Europe. Later he and Betty journeyed to far-away lands, including Asia, Central and South America.
The lowest point in Jack’s life came with the death of his son Trevor in 2004. While his darkest chapter, neither his zest for life nor
passion for adventure were ever dampened. He lived and laughed well to the very end. Even when dying he would muster the brightest smile and tell those around him that he’s doing “pretty good”.

His spirit endures through his wife Betty, son Jay (Sharon), brothers Fred (Marion) and David. Notably gentle and loving, he treated all with warmth and kindness. those who knew him were moved by his contagious smile, his art, cartoons and humour. His friendship was genuine and uncomplicated.
