Lucy went to school at Brook Street school as well as Fairfield’s girls school. When she finished school she worked at Portals Ltd – making paper money, both English and Foreign - for 6 years from the time she finished school until coming to Canada in 1946. At 16 years old, when Word War II started and she, like quite a few other girls of her time wanted to join the WRENS, but was too young. She volunteered with the air raid wardens, also helping with the wounded at the hospitals and with the Home Guard. In those days, women wore curlers in their hair and Lucy remarked on how it was awkward putting on the tin helmet over the curlers when the air raid siren went off at night. She did her share during the War by volunteering and donating blood. She was also a member of the curling club and the Toch H. Club.
Lucy came to Canada as a war bride. She met Walter in 1972 and married into a very special family. She made many friends over the years in England and in Canada and was a member of the Vancouver Island War Bride Association. She made many more friends when she joined the War Bride Association, especially Joan who also came from Basingstoke and after 45 years they were reunited as friends. Lucy was also a member of the Sunshine Club in Port Alberni, as well as the Royal Canadian legion in Fort Smith and in Port Alberni as a volunteer in the Ladies Auxiliary.
After many years of living in Port Alberni, she moved to The Gardens in Qualicum following the passing of Walter in 2005, where she enjoyed the many activities, the residents and the friends she found who welcomed her there.
