Phyllis was born September 24, 1933, in Calgary, Alberta, to a loving and devoutly Christian family. She spent her early childhood on a farm in Millarville and later moved into Calgary. Her teen years were spent in Victoria where she attended Victoria High School, and later St. Joseph’s School of Nursing.
After graduation she embarked on an extremely challenging, but immensely rewarding nursing career in Northern BC. She made many lifelong friends during those years, and later reminisced so fondly of that time in her life.
She moved to the Alberni Valley in 1967 when she married Jim Darby. They resided on the Darby family farm, and raised a family there.
During her 50 years in the Alberni Valley, Phyllis was a very active member of the Anglican Church and Beta Sigma Pi Sorority; she received her 60 year sorority membership just this past August. She also worked for Public Health, and was involved with several charities.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Jim Darby, in 2016.
She leaves behind her daughters Doreen Meldrum (Ted) and Heather Darby, grandsons Spencer and Cole, and granddaughters Sydney and Isla, as well as many loving relatives and friends.
At Phyllis’ request, a service will be held at Trinity Anglican/Lutheran Church, on Monday, September 25, at 11am, with tea to follow.
The family would like to thank the staff at Echo Village and the volunteers of Port Alberni Hospice for the care and compassion extended to Phyllis.
