Ray lived in Port Alberni his entire life, a large part of it spent at Sproat Lake, after marrying the love of his life, Pat.
Ray was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Johann Nass, his brother Norman Nass, who was seven years older and sister Sylvia McMillan who was seventeen years older and who both spoiled him rotten. Ray is survived by his three sons, Mike (Sandra) Kelly (Marie) and Lee, five grandchildren – Rai-Ann, Nicole, Cody, Josh and Christian – four great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a whole circle of friends including their best friends from childhood Dave and Cheryl Patterson. He is also survived by his dear family in Norway that he stayed in touch with and his two beloved cats Rudy and Rusty.
Screwbie, as he was nicknamed by his brother in law Norm McMillan, had a great sense of humor, loved cruising around the lake in his boat, helped restart the Regatta, owned many hot rods, was president of the RC club for years, helped many people stop smoking when he ran the Fresh Start program, apparently taught hundreds of people to water ski, was a wine lover and invented COOL.
Ray worked at the pulp mill for 32 years, retiring early at 56 so he could spend more time traveling and enjoying his days on the lake. Ray and Pat often travelled, spending time in Mexico, Cook Islands, Vegas, Phoenix, all across Canada and lots of cruises. Later in life Ray fulfilled his lifelong dream and travelled home to Norway to visit his family and the homes of his parents.
Ray died peacefully with his family by his side.
The family would like to thank the hospital staff for the incredible care he received, especially Dr. White, Dr. Warbrick, and nurses Dave Gilbert and Loy. And all of the strength and support from Dr. Freddie Meyer, his wife Karen, Dave and Cheryl and all of his friends and family who helped.
A Memorial Service for Ray will be held at First Baptist Church on Tuesday October 3rd at 11:00 am
