He graduated from Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, in 1938. He attended Snow Junior College in Ephraim, Utah, for one year. He then had to find work gardening and raising turkeys for two years.
His family moved to Fresno, California, and he located his residency in Bakersfield, where he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a machinist. He was about to be drafted into the Army, so he enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942. He was aboard the Coast Guard cutter 80307, stationed in Port Angeles. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Iriene Allen, and they were together until June of 1988, when she passed away.
He was a general contractor in Port Angeles first with R & H Builders with partner Ken Hughes and then his own company, Frank C. Rich Builder. He enjoyed his work and throughout the years made many friends.
After retirement, he continued to do "fun jobs" for his family and friends. He enjoyed his garden and growing tomatoes, which he loved to share with everyone. He would say, "A friend who takes time to care is a friend unaware."
He later married Lucille Anderson until her death in 2001.
He leaves behind his daughters, Annette Johnson and Margie Helgeson; Margie's husband, Randy, who was as close to him as any son could have been; his "baby sister," Lorna Sheppard in Virginia; along with 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, all of whom had a big place in his heart.
He always had time to listen, and his wisdom will never be forgotten by those who took their time to spend with him.
There will be graveside service at Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 West 18th Street, Port Angeles, on Saturday, September 15, 2012, at 1 p.m., where he will be placed alongside his wife, Iriene.
A celebration of life will follow at his home at 866 Mount Pleasant Road, Port Angeles.
Everyone is welcome to come say goodbye to a very "special" man
